Te Tiriti o Waitangi
To the Whānau and Community of Whakarewarewa School,
The Board of Trustees has written a letter to the Ministry of Education to state
our opposition to their recent directive to remove expectations of school Boards
of Trustees to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
This approach from the Ministry of Education undermines the partnership
between Tangata Whenua and the Crown and deprioritises the focus on equity,
inclusion and cultural identity as a core focus of all schools in Aotearoa.
Whakarewarewa School is proud of our Whakapapa, connections and
relationships with Mana Whenua. As a Board, we are committed to ensuring that
Te Tiriti o Waitangi informs our governance and decision-making, and we will
continue to honour the principles of Te Tiriti in our work as Trustees of the
School.
We thank our community for the ongoing support as we work towards our
vision of all ākonga showing leadership, determination, achievement and
success.
